The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) should respect the zoning agreement with regards to the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.
He made the submission on Sunday when he appeared as a guest on a Channels TV interview programme and was asked by the anchor for his view about the 2023 zoning arrangement.
In his reply, Amaechi, who also made reference to an earlier statement by his counterpart in the Ministry of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, declared that it will be the right thing to do for the APC and the North to respect the zoning arrangement.
The Minister said: “It is a difficult question for me to respond to. I just believe that the zoning which was done in the north and south should be respected, just like Fashola said.”
When asked if he was nursing a presidential ambition either in 2023 or sometimes later in the future, Amaechi who is from Rivers State, responded that he would rather focus on carrying out his responsibilities as a Minister for now rather than talk about his political ambition, noting that it is “a bit too early.” to have such conversations.
He said: “The best conversation to have now is how to deliver on the railway, maritime as it pertains to the responsibility assigned to me by the president.”
“Why not allow me to complete the responsibility that has been given to me by the president which is being the minister of transportation.”
While there have been calls for the presidency to return to the south in 2023 once President Muhammadu Buhari who is from Katsina completes his tenure, some politicians have openly declared that they would rather support competence over zoning in the 2023 presidential election.
