The South East caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently announced Governor Ugwuanyi of Enugu state as its new leader following the defection of the former occupant Engr. Dave Umahi to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in November 2020. It is important to note that the emergence of Ugwuanyi did not come to many as a surprise.
For one, the leadership qualities of Mr. Fulfilment resonates and have continued to resonate with a wide spectrum of groups within and without political circles.
For another, Rt. Honourable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi fits an ideal specie of a leader who the ancient Chinese Philosopher Lao Tzu had in mind and the metrics for measuring a man of greatness… Gentility, frugality and humility. Gburu-Gburu had these virtues to boot. Therefore it is only natural that he who the cap fits, let him wear. Our Igbo adage was emphatic with the same mantra “Anya ka-eji ama oka chara acha” transliterated to mean that one does not need to look twice to determine a ripened cob of maize.
Rt. Honourable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi seem to have happened to his society at a time, it is in dire need of forward looking, astute and courageous leaders who not only have the capacity to lead from the Frontline but one who is ready to lay down his life to protect that which is entrusted in his care. The acting Chairman of PDP South East zone, Mr. Ali Odefa in announcing the appointment of Ugwuanyi as the new leader bares it all… “We unanimously adopted Gov Ugwuanyi as leader of PDP in the South East zone because of his immeasurable contributions in the region… We are sure and satisfied that he will lead South East PDP to success, having considered the governors outstanding performance in office and in a consensus, adopted him as leader of the party”, Mr. Ali concluded.
It is important to stress the absolute confidence the South East zonal caucus of PDP has in the person of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in appointing him the consensus leader of the largest opposition party in Nigeria South East, Nigeria and his capacity to bring to bear his wealth of experience in governance to reinvigorate the PDP in the South East region.
Governor Ugwuanyi unarguably is an unsung hero whose trajectories in all socio-political sectors remains a mystery even to his ardent critics. He is peace personified and well tolerant of opposing views from within and without his political base. Little wonder, Enugu state remains unarguably a state in the federation where political opposition is virtually non existent. He plays politics without bitterness. This is exactly what the South East caucus of PDP wants him to replicate in the entire South East zone.
I am truly certain that the party have hit the bull’s eyes with their choice of Ugwuanyi as their new leader. I am also certain that in the fullness of time, the party will become as formidable as in the days of yore.
Ali Odefa expressed this high confidence thus… PDP South East is putting its house in order, we are drawing and calculating and at the fullest of time, the successes will announce the effort we have made so far, ” What can we further add but to wish Rt. Honourable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Gburu-Gburu of Enugu state, South East zone and Nigeria as a whole a resounding success in his new assignment.
