A colleague of mine who lives in the coal city state was actually excited last week when we chatted over the phone. When I enquired about his unusual hearty disposition, he laughed hard again and confessed to me matter of factly that Enugu state is truly in the hands of God. He went on to add that his appreciation of the refrain in Enugu which is associated with the Governor that Enugu is in the hands of God is not a political gimmickry but a true reflection of what God is using one man to fulfill in the affairs of a society. He asserted that His Excellency Rt. Honorable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is truly God sent to good people of Enugu state. When we ended the call, I read a news flash from the media aide of the Governor, Mr. Louis Amoke. The news release has to do with Ugwuanyi’s latest strides in the health cum education sector. Although the friend I referred to above would not inform me that he was part of the team on the Governor’s convoy which went for the facility inspections of the ongoing construction works in the state owned University ESUT. It was his confirmation of this later on, that compelled this article.
I was kept wondering if this man variously known as Gburu-Gburu, Mr. Fulfillment, Mr. Project would ever be tired even as 2023 closes in. Governor Ugwuanyi has stepped on the accelerator with an uncommon energy that even his worst critics cannot but admire his drive to bequeath ndi Enugu with a lasting legacy difficult to forget in the next generation. Another important thing that need be buttressed here is his canny for taking up on these projects simultaneously despite the glaring economic downturn and pushing through with them as if his entire life hangs on their completion. But one may not really be surprised because the Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi that we know is a godly man and a man of integrity. A Godly man and a man of integrity is that man who is investing in his future and those of his generation. He is that man building his fortress in heaven where no moth would be able to reach it.
Sure, His Excellency, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is investing in the future of the generality of youths of this nation as exemplified by the ongoing massive construction works at the permanent site of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital and the College of Medicine located at Igbo-Eno. Ugwuanyi must be commended for embarking on these landmark projects which are verifiable and cannot in any way be considered as elephant projects. He would not like to burden his successor with many uncompleted projects. It is only a man of integrity and a man with the fear of God in him with an uncommon courage can undertake to embark on so many landmark projects with the prospects of enriching the future of his society.
Just recently, the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) Chairman, Chief Ikeje Asogwa reeled out the many landmark interventions of the Governor in both primary and secondary school system in the state to include the recruitment of a total of 7,030 primary and secondary school teachers and the procurement and distribution of over 48,000 classroom furniture and other learning tools for school children and their teachers across the state.
Ugwuanyi is not just stopping at the secondary level but had to step up his game at the tertiary level and in a humongous way despite scarce resources. The infrastructural projects going on simultaneously at the permanent site of the state owned ESUT include two Teaching Hospital complexes, two units of 12-classroom faculty buildings, 10-classroom faculty building and two units of 8-classroom faculty buildings for the ESUT College of Medicine, which has been relocated to the Nsukka region including an industrial water borehole project.
The beloved child of David Nwa Ugwuanyi should be roundly commended for these on going projects and much more and for being a frugal manager of scarce resources. Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is a workaholic par excellence. May God provide a perfect replacement for him as we continue to affirm that Enugu state is truly in the hands of God.
