What defines a man’s character is not where he stands at his Comfort period but, what he does at his trying times. This explains why both sociological, philosophical and even the enquiries of psychoanalysts formed a common confluence on the premise that a man’s attitude or reaction at perilous circumstances is the ultimate definition of his true personality. Our Igbo forefathers must have been great psychoanalysts when they said that “mberede nyiri dike, mana, o bukwazi mberede ka e ji ama dike”. transliterated to mean “Emergency fails a great person, but it is also emergency situation that defines a great person”.
When you read social critics assert His Excellency, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi’s personality as meek, humane, humble and lowliness of the mind, it does not come from faith nor mere baseless praise-singing to a leader who has over-fulfilled his promises to the good Enugu residents, but from chains of leadership traits cum attitude which the Governor has at one point or another exhibited, most especially effortlessly.
It is an easy-peasy for Governor Ugwuanyi to put a phone call across whoever it is within his commission or ministry and order that the recent fire outbreak at the INEC office be put out. No! The lowly-at-heart son of Ugwuanyi who thinks that leadership occurs when leaders say, “let’s do…”, not “Hey Mr! Go with your team to…”, chose to lead the rescue team himself to ensure efficient, immediate, and timely quenching of the fire.
Immediately Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was briefed by the electoral officer in charge, Mr Dustan Eke on the Udenu INEC office fire incidence reported to have been caused by power surge in the building, Gov Ugwuanyi and his team raced and got to the scene of the incident at exactly 11:44pm on the 13th of May 2021, to ensure effective intervention of the newly constructed fire service stations in Udenu and Igbo-Eze North Local Government Areas, as well as that of Nsukka LGA. His immediate motive was to have first hand feel of the unfortunate incident and to ensure safety of lives and property.
The above is what leadership is all about. The above calls to mind stories of how great Biblical Kings like Saul, David and others who led their people to war, not sitting tight at the comfort of their homes to issue orders to subordinates. Such attitude to governance have always proved counter productive especially when instant response is highly desired. According to the GLOBE study, charismatic and value-based leadership reflects the ability to inspire, to motivate and expect high performance on firmly held core values such as what Governor Ugwuanyi keeps bringing to table.
Before I drop my pen here, think of how you feel, when your father picks a broom for himself and requests you to join hands so both of you can clean the house. The leadership traits one can carefully deduce from His Excellency, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, the Executive Governor of Enugu state are the following: visionary, inspirational, self-sacrifice, integrity, decisiveness, selflessness, and performance oriented style. This set of leadership behaviours is most closely associated to transformational leadership theory as opposed to transactional leadership. Sincerely, Enugu State is in the hands of God.
