In Nigeria, the military is viewed from a limiting lens of it’s primary role of security against both external and internal incursion that threatens national sovereignty. Nigeria, as a country with abrasive military record soaked in past history of military putsch and take overs, have not had it so good in the management of civilian-military relationship. Fortunately, Governor Ugwuanyi led administration corrected this historical anomalies and indifferences by working harmoniously with the men and women of the Armed forces and other paramilitary agencies.
To strengthen the administration’s resolve to engender good working relationship with the military and other security agencies, his Excellency, the governor of Enugu state during the event to mark this year’s 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day made a handsome donation of sum of five million Naira to the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army meant to be distributed to the widows of the slain military men who were cut down fighting for the enthronement of peace and security of the Nigerian nation. Governor Ugwuanyi amply understands the noble roles of the military in national security and peace building.
It is often said that one cannot give what he/she do not have. Generosity is one of the outstanding and peculiar attributes of our own Gov.Ugwuanyi which has endeared him to many people. Governor Ugwuanyi further supported the Skills Empowerment Programme of the Army Officers Wife Association with the sum of N5 Million.
Recall in 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration the Enugu State helmsman magnanimously resuscitated the hope of 95 widows by approving the disbursement of the sum of N19 Million to affected women to
engage in their preferred enterprises.
Impressed by the undisputable role of the Military in the year 2017, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi awarded a contract to the Engineering corps of the Nigerian Army Lagos for the construction of Bailey Bridge at Okpanku in Aninri LGA of Enugu State.
Because of Army’s rich history of competence in delivery of Bailey bridges, Gov Ugwuanyi made a deliberate choice by awarding to 82 Division Army Corps of Engineers construction of a bridge over Inyaba River, in Enugu South LGA.These rare acts and gesture of Gburugburu, had continued to foster and strengthen the age long cooperation among Gov.Ugwuanyi and the military.
“KA ONYE SI EME, KA EKWE JI AKPO YA” (The character of a person, determines how the drums would be played for him/her). Governor Ugwuanyi has a history of excellent and vibrant human relations with a wide spectrum of individuals and groups. This has been demonstrated over time. Governor Ugwuanyi has hosted high and top-notch ranking officers of the Military and Paramilitary agencies in Enugu. Such harmonious and cordial relationship attracted the presence of the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. T.Y Buratai whom before his retirement paid a courtesy visit to the peace oriented and tolerant leader, Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi. Such regular and dependable partnership between the Governor and Military/Paramilitary had not only offered support in area of intelligence gathering and other logistics support, but had sustained a commendable and high level of security and peaceful environment in Enugu State.
Furthermore, it had been commonly observed of frigid and unsettling relationship existing among some State Governors and their State Commissioners of Police. It is practically clear that when two elephants fight, the grasses feel the brunt. Such unhealthy and frosty relationships if not properly addressed continues to undermine the peace and security of the affected States.
This unfortunate scenario played out when Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi hold sway as governor of Rivers state and were embroiled in an unending war of attrition with the then, police commissioner in the state, Mr. Joseph Mbu.
As the Chief Security Officer of our dear State Gov. Ugwuanyi has continued to maintain robust working relationship with his State Commisioners of Police, General Commanding Officer, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army and Zonal and Sector Commanders of Federal Road Safety, Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corp, Federal Fire Service etc.
In Gov. Ugwuanyi, the people of Enugu State elected a man with a robust flare for good governance. An ebullient leader who employs utmost wisdom and professionalism in handling issues. Just like a popular police slogan would read “POLICE IS YOUR FRIEND” Governor Ugwuanyi has strongly affirmed in his relationship with the Nigerian Police that he is truly their friend.
As part of his plan to keep and maintain robust relationship as strongly reaffirmed in his determination to support and align with the good initiatives of the military and other Paramilitary agencies, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had since the inception of his administration donated a good number of patrol vehicles with modern communication gadgets to the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps among others for effective surveillance and patrol of the state.
May God continue bless Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for Ndi Enugu. In him we made an excellent choice. We do hope that God will provide another replica of him post 2023. So help us God.
