When God Rules In The Affairs Of Men

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him (her) from them all Psalm 34:19. The aforestated quote from the Psalmist is simply stating that tribulations and misfortunes are well ingrained in a man’s destiny and therefore no man no matter highly or lowly placed, no matter how spiritually inclined or debased, troubles must find it’s way to harass a man’s life. But the assurance of the Maker of man is certain and definite. He will deliver the just man from his or her afflictions. These days, when we are not regaled with the unsavory news of kidnapping of school children in their numbers, it is to be inundated with the number of unusual deaths of innocent souls by bandits popularized as “unknown gun men” armed robbers, cultists and sundry evil marauders. Before our very eyes, these are everyday occurrences in our land. But like our people would always idiomatize, “When death happens to another person, the pain of death may not be felt as when such death happens to us”. But it is true! A man’s pains is usually exclusive rather than inclusive. One cannot really claim to imagine one’s pains if it has not been experienced first hand. It is equally true that almost every single soul would have experienced the pain of death at one time or another, yet when it happens to another at any point in time, the pain is always farther away from us. This is the reality of life.

Yet, it takes the ever refreshing grace of the Almighty God for anyone, most especially for a leader to wear the garment of empathy and shared pain to sympathize with victims of k wherever they are found. Now let’s identify the crux of this commentary. In the time past, Nigerians were treated to gales of inhuman treatment from a set of public officials and funded by the people through taxation which later gave rise to series of protests across the land in condemnation of what is referred to as police brutality. The experiences of the past by the people in the hands of the same people paid to protect them is better forgotten. But how is this possible when tales continued to filter in that some debased minds from the stock of the security operatives have remained unchanged? The fatal shooting on Sunday, the 20th of June, 2021 of five innocent souls, cut down in their primes with their untapped talents is just another sore case in point. While we commiserate sincerely with the families of the victims of the unfortunate incident and numerous others affected by the fact of a police officer’s misuse of fire arms allocated to him, we must equally commend the wholesome leadership displayed by his Excellency, the governor of Enugu state, Rt. Honorable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Governor Ugwuanyi was spotted at the Golf Estate, GRA scene of the incident on a Sunday morning consoling the victims and offering personal help where needed. Perhaps, Ugwuanyi could have been alerted of the incident while fellowshiping with his Maker in a church or at home. This reminds me of a sermon delivered by a young catholic clergy man who asserted that it is much acceptable in the sight of God to use a tithe offering meant for God to assist a man who has immediate use of it. Governor Ugwuanyi could have abandoned whatever he was doing on this fateful Sunday to rush to the scene of the incident which affected some of his subjects. His actions speaks volumes of a capacity leader who works 24/7 with little time to himself. It reflects a true leadership traits that seems to say that I’m for everybody and therefore, I am always available. Apart from the physical presence of the Governor at the scene of the unfortunate incident, he also visited the victims at the ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane, Enugu where they have been evacuated to for prompt medical attention while he picked the medical bills of the injured victims on behalf of the state government. What a humane leader we have in Ugwuanyi!
Governor Ugwuanyi who was visibly shaken by the unfortunate death of five innocent citizens and the injuries of several others charged the medical personnel at the referral hospital to do all that is humanly possible to ensure that the living victims are restored back to good health.

Truly, when God rules in the affairs of men, the society is much better for it. God rules perfectly in the affairs of Ugwuanyi and his administration in Enugu State. To God be the glory!
