The speed with which Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi responds to any emergency is indeed amazing and heart warming as well. He is always on ground and on the spot to see things for himself and to have first hand information on issues as it were. Governor Ugwuanyi is unarguable a leader of men and the kind leader every society will desire to have.
On Sunday, the 20th June 2021, there was a misuse of a firearm by a police officer at Golf Estate. This led to the death of about five persons and quite a few injured ones eventually evacuated to Packlane hospitals Enugu. The Governor was reported to have left every other business as soon as he got wind of the unfortunate incident to storm the scene in company of retinue of aides. Governor Ugwuanyi was later spotted at the lotto shop inside Golf Estate where the incident happened to commiserate with the victims of the unwarranted shooting by a police operative. To demonstrate his humanist dispositions, the Governor promised to foot the entire medical expenses that might accrue from the treatment of the injured victims and even made some down payments to demonstrate his seriousness. Gov Ugwuanyi equally condoled with the relatives of the deceased and have promised to assist them. This is the kind of leader we need.
Recall that when there was fire outbreak at the INEC office in Udenu Local Government Area, the governor responded immediately to ascertain first hand information without minding the unholy hour, such incident was reported to him. I was able to re-examine the inner thrust of a man who have many aides as a sitting Chief Executive, yet he chose to work 24 /7 round the clock to ensure that things go well for his subjects. Governor Ugwuanyi refused to accept the stereotyping of a leader who sits down to dish out orders or one who is won’t to accept the reports of subordinates that might be compromised. Everyone around the workaholic governor must have studied this about Ugwuanyi and would have been kept on their toes for good.
Other incidences abound where the governor have demonstrated overtime that he is not cut out to be a lazy leader. A true leader of the people must be able to demonstrate capacity, embody strength of character, lead from the front to show example, have large dosage of empathy and stream of emotion. Ugwuanyi have these attributes and much more. The recent torching and gruesome murder of about 4 police personnel at Iwollo divisional police headquarters was another case in focus. Governor Ugwuanyi did not just visit the scene of the ugly incident to condole with the victims of the dastardly act, but made a donation of a brand new Hilux SUV to assist the police reclaim the security space since the operational vehicle belonging to the division was equally burnt alongside other critical equipments.
Another case in point happened when the school bus of Presentation Nursery And Primary School Awgu was involved in a fatal Road Traffic Crash (RTC), he was not just there in person when the victims were being buried to show sincere sympathy, he was later to replace the ill fated school bus with a brand new Toyota commuter bus. Another incident that must not escape mention in this piece is his Excellency’s total care and concern when a communal clash between Oruku and Umuode claimed the life of the traditional ruler of Oruku, late Igwe Emmanuel Mba. He was visibly moved with compassion, prompting his government to set up a judicial commission of enquiry to determine the facts of the crisis and make recommendations to stem future occurrence. Ugwuanyi is a man of peace and abhors violence of any nature.
It is important to stress that the governor’s physical presence at the scenes of unfortunate incidences is enough soothing balm to any wound or aggravated injury. It speaks volumes. We all knows that “it works like paracetamol is not the same thing as paracetamol”. An Igbo adage says that sorry does not heal a wound but it is very good for the sick. His presence alone is assurance of care and show of concern. This is the kind of leader we need and we are not ashamed to say that Enugu State is in the hand of God.
