Governor Ugwuanyi and sustainable rural development

Since the inception of the current administration, the State government has through it’s coordinated efforts increased investment and enhanced international cooperation by partnering with international reputable organization such as World Bank in funding parts of her developmental programs especially in the areas of Rural infrastructural development and road networks, agricultural research, development and extension services, technology advancements and primary health care systems.

The current administration has proven its competency to make the State conducive for human resources development and resilient for sustainable growth and development of critical sectors of our economy aimed at eliminating hunger and poverty through integrated platforms in solving employment challenges and creating enabling environment for business to thrive. This is the reason why the current administration is supporting positive economic, social and environmental linkages between rural and urban areas by
strengthening road network and sitting of some developmental projects in some remote areas which is aimed at accelerating faster economic development and growth. The avowed stance of the current administration on sustainable rural development has created the necessary vigour to the economic, social and environmental viability of the state, which is essential for poverty eradication. To achieve this feat of Rural development, the current administration adopted the strategies of dealing with each Community development based on need assessment and comparative advantage with the aim of unlocking the potentials in such rural community and provide targeted differentiated approaches to their needs for faster economic development and growth.

The current Administration understood that a healthy and dynamic agricultural sector is an important foundation of rural development, generating strong linkages to other economic sectors. The appreciation of this gave vent to the acquisition and distribution of agricultural inputs and loans to Farmers to enable them improve on their farming experiences and ensure food security in the state. To boost effective participation of the rural people in the management of their own social, economic and environmental objectives, the State government began a sensitization tour through the SME Centre aimed at empowering people in rural areas, particularly women and youth to engage in one business or the other by providing seed capital to anyone willing to venture into any business of interest.

It is note worthy that governor Ugwuanyi led administration has created considerable potential for rural job creation outside farming and agro related business by embarking on massive rural amenities to stem rural urban migration. It is important to mention for emphasis some of the rural development trajectories of Ugwuanyi’s administration in the last six years.

1. Promotion of poverty eradication.

2. Addressing the basic needs and provision of land and access to services as a precursor to improve livelihoods and as an enabling factor of peoples engagement in productive activities. This has reduced cost of living.

3. Provision of social protection programmes to benefit the poorest of the poor, the aged, persons with disabilities and the unemployed, many of whom are in rural areas.

4. Empowerment of women and youths to engage in small-scale farming and other businesses.

5. Blending modern technologies with traditional and indigenous knowledge for sustainable rural development through integrated digital economy.

6. Strengthening of the capacities of rural communities to build social capital through various grants made available to them.

7. Strengthening rural health-care facilities and capacities through in service training of primary health practitioners and increase in the number of health and nutrition professionals; expand access to primary health-care systems and promotion of equitable and improved access to affordable and efficient health-care services.

8. Developed education for self-reliance which has reduced over dependency on government for job creation. .

9. Promotion of public and private investments in infrastructures in the rural areas.

Anyone who is in doubt of the giant strides recorded by the current administration should hurriedly tour our Rural areas where the bulk of achievements of Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration is laid bare for posterity. Let the good work continue for a better tomorrow.
