The above question seem to be on the lips of all lovers of good governance exemplified by the good natured leader of Enugu State, our own Gburu-Gburu, Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi. For one, those who had diligently followed Ugwuanyi’s journey since assuming power in 2015 would testify to the fact that he is indeed a capacity leader. Virtually all sectors of the state’s socio-political economy has had a touch of Ugwuanyi’s magic wand. It cannot be argued forcefully too even by most ardent critics of his administration that the relative peace and harmony existing in Enugu state today owe it’s root to the exceptional management of issues that has potentials to engulf the state in unwarranted security breaches. While other states in the federation especially in the South East geo-political zone are embroiled with multi-dimentional security issues such as wanton destruction of public facilities, killing and maiming of security operatives, kidnap for ransom, destruction of farm lands and killing of innocent farmers by the evil herdsmen to mention but these few, Enugu State has remained relatively calm in comparison to what is obtainable elsewhere. This feat might not have come on a platter. It is truly as a result of the diligent environmental audit by the Ugwuanyi led administration and the deployment of necessary strategies and tactics to nip crisis that has potential to breach the peace of the land in the bud.
Only recently, the livestock traders in the new Artisan market populated largely by the traders of northern extraction would have caused humongous security breach if not for the good wisdom aided by unshakable God’s grace by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Only those close to the seat of power can appreciate the enormous sacrifices made by the governor, just so that Ndi Enugu can continue to enjoy their peace and carry on with their socio-economic activities in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. For a very long time in the history of Enugu State, the state’s reputation as a tranquil abode and the headquarters of the elitist’s abode especially citizens from the South East Zone has remained largely unshaken. Enugu state is unarguably for a long time too to the Igbos what Kaduna state is to the Northern elites. It is important however to stress that this exceptional profile of Enugu State took better grades since the assumption of power by the present administration. Not quite a few therefore were dismayed by the not too pleasant tales coming from the entrails of this pride of the Eastern region. It galls the bucal cavity to no end, that some unknown enemies of the state have studiously conspired among themselves to distablize the peace of a state enabled largely by an embodiment of peace who meant well for his people. From the staccato of gun fire that uprooted few well meaning citizens in recent time in the heart of Enugu to brazen robberies in broad day light and in an ever busy location and elsewhere can no longer be taken for granted. Agreed that security is every body’s business but the larger chunk of security responsibilities lies with the government. Therefore, it will not look out of place if the lovers of Ugwuanyi and his administration would raise a concern about the seeming slip of the state to join the other states in insecurity ignominy in recent time. God forbid!
To demonstrate his avowed stance to maintain the status of Enugu as a peace heaven, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi rose quickly to address this issue of serious concern and called a security meeting with the Chiefs of extant security services working in Enugu which held behind closed doors at the Lion building. It is to chart a new formula and tactics to beat the enemies of the people to their game. This is quite commendable. Governor Ugwuanyi is only confirming to the citizens that he has not gone and will never sleep enough until Enugu rediscovers herself as the darling of the Eastern bloc in all spheres of cultural, politics and economy. We cannot really fault his antecedents.
It is equally good to note that Gov. Ugwuanyi reputed to lead from the front lines, immediately proceeded with the security chiefs and other critical stakeholders after the meeting to some forests and escape routes used by the gunmen across four local government areas in the state with a view to fashioning out the best strategy to make crime and criminality unappealing to criminal minded elements in the society. Now that their possible escape routes have been identified, it remains to be seen if the criminals will not give it a second thought before venturing in to wreck another havoc in the state. It is important to stress also that the best antidote to crime and criminality remains the conscious efforts by government at all levels to provide good governance that could amply steer away the minds of the criminal minded elements in the society and make them to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the society rather than engage their minds in criminal activities.
Governor Ugwuanyi must be commended for taking this campaign and advocacy very seriously by his examplary leadership. We are truly rest assured that Enugu state is in the hands of God and forever.
