Suspect Accused Of Leading Attack On Police Team Dies In Custody

A suspect, accused of being behind the recent attack on a police patrol team in Bayelsa State, has died in the custody of the Nigeria Police.
The suspect, identified as Goodluck Oviekeme is said to be the mastermind behind the September 21, 2021 attack on a police patrol team in the state capital during which an officer was fatally injured and his gun carted away.

Oviekeme who was arrested by the Police on Wednesday reportedly started developing a high temperature and was rushed to the hospital where he eventually gave up the ghost.

The incident has been confirmed in a statement on Saturday by the Bayelsa Police spokesman, SP Asinim Butswat.

According to the Police PRO, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Echeng E. Echeng, has already ordered a discreet investigation into the matter while an autopsy will be carried out on the body of the deceased to determine the nature of his death.

He said: “The deceased suspect was arrested in connection with the armed robbery incident that occurred on 21 September 2021, at Biogbolo, Yenagoa, when hoodlums attacked Police Patrol team, fatally injured Inspector Ugbotor Sunday and carted away his riffle.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that Goodluck Oviekeme was the mastermind of the attack on the patrol team.

“He was arrested on 22 September, 2021 at about 0300 hours, while in Police custody the suspect was observed to be running high temperature and was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died.

“The CP condoles with the family of the deceased and assures the general public that an investigation has commenced and the outcome will be made public.”

Meanwhile, security operatives attached to the Denton Police Station have arrested a young creditor identified as Oluchi Okoye aka PACA for tying his debtor, Reuben Alozie, to a stake over unpaid N4.6m debt.

The suspect tied the victim to a stick with ropes at No. 29, Abeokuta Street, Ebute Metta, Lagos from 22nd September to 23rd September when he was eventually released by the police.

According to the suspect, he resulted in self-help after several efforts to recover his money from the victim failed.
