Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi emerged leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Nigeria’s South East Zone, not many political observers expressed surprise at the turn of events.
Not too long thereafter, Ugwuanyi was mandated by the party hierarchy to come up with a zoning formula for the major opposition party. Apparently, this was to forestall unnecessary bickering and implosion at the just concluded Abuja convention
The decision to give him such sensitive assignments could be an acknowledgement of the Governor as quintessential, trustworthy and dependable.
Perhaps, the PDP could not have made a better choice.
Earlier, Ugwuanyi was in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state where he successfully conducted, without qualms, the party’s primaries.
There were predictions that the Enugu Hemslman was moving up the ladder, definitely to be honoured with more roles at the national level as events unfolded.
His antecedents mark the Governor out as a remarkable personality to watch, indeed remarkable candidate for the top job.
With his growing profile and clout, it does not require soothsayers to predict once more that Gov Ugwuanyi is inching towards Nigeria’s events centre.
And so today, as the clock ticks, the permutations across the South East, and even beyond is that Ugwuanyi has acquired the pedigree to shoulder any responsibility, no matter how herculean.
First, Ugwuanyi has distinguished himself as a true nationalist, an acclaimed democrat, a bridge builder, acknowledged peace advocate and outstanding administrator.
Secondly, his constituents score him high as a performer whose administration has, in spite of odds touched lives.
No wonder, the Coal City has continued to witness influx of entrepreneurs, holiday makers and tourists who believe Enugu is today about the most peaceful state in the country.
Thirdly, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Enugu State, under Hon. Augustine Nnamani has remained a formidable pillar behind the Governor all these years.
The party has been structured under an executive, imbued with discipline and a sense of mission.
Most top level Exco members have been tested in various other capacities where their performances were adjudged excellent.
In Enugu PDP, bickering is an abberation. Altercation is history. War trumpets are consigned to the dustbin. The PDP is a party without crack.
And so, it could be safe to say that Augustine Nnamani led Exco has, expectedly provided the platform for the enduring peace and tranquility manifesting in all facets of the state polity today.
Ugwuanyi enjoys the trust and confidence of his colleagues, suffice it to say that the triumvirite of Hon. Augustine Nnamani, Hon. Innocent Ezeoha and Hon. Cletus Akalusi have acquitted themselves in office.
That Gburugburu has continued to attract handshake across borders could be traced to his unique credentials: respect for the views of other people. In dealing with other authorities, Ugwuanyi is hardly confrontational.
And so, not a few were united in insisting that this great son of the Igbo nation deserves any responsibility or any position reserved for men and women of great accomplishments.
And with such a great man right at the Centre, the place of Ndigbo cannot be wished away.
