Agriculture is essentially concerned with the production of essential food crops for human and animal consumption. Over the years, Agricultural ventures have assumed a dynamic engineering to include processing, marketing and distribution of crops and livestock products both for human and industrial uses. The fields of agriculture are legion. It is in the realization of the uncommon importance of agriculture, that government across the globe have shown more than a little commitment to ensure food security for the teeming population. Aside the importance of agriculture as a basal bone of the economy, it helps to create ripple effects in the employment chain. In other words, analysts are agreed that agricultural ventures are capable of generating millions of employment opportunities both in direct and indirect modes.
In recognition of this sacred truth and determined to succeed in all critical sectors of the state economy, governor Ugwuanyi embarked on what is considered massive agricultural revolution in the state to serve as the desired catalyst for accelerated growth of the state economy. He initiated agricultural reforms aimed at keeping this all important sector as the ultimate economic driver.
It is to his credit that the Enugu State Vertinary school located in Achi in Oji River council area was magnificently rehabilitated with new class room and hostel blocks to boot for the female students.
The ensure utmost health of Enugu indigenes who consume livestock, more veternary control posts for animal inspection stations have been constructed along border regions.
Under the aegis of International Fund for Agricultural Development, Gov.Ugwuanyi made funds available for cassava and rice production in five(5) Local Government Areas of the state. The beneficiary councils are Enugu East, Aninri, Udenu, Nkanu East and Isi-Uzo. Other accompanying developments include; the establishment of Efi Igbo Development Cluster, Installation of ICT softwares and databank for agricultural information system and the establishment of ICT centers with special bias for agricultural researches.
Other far reaching measures of governor Ugwuanyi led administration is the approval of the construction of Fish value chain complex at Asata mine road farm.
Good performances and effective service delivery has become the hallmark of governor Ugwuanyi’s administration despite the glaring economic challenges.
As a visionary and proactive leader, governor Ugwuanyi is putting measures in place to carry out Avian Influenza surveillance, prevention and control across the 17 Local Government areas of the state.
In the wake of the devastating effects of COVID-19 in Agricultural endeavors, governor Ugwuanyi took another bold step to make available to over 2000 rice and cassava farmers in the state agric inputs, seedlings and other Agro-based chemicals to boost agricultural productivity in the state.
Under yet another initiative of the state government to boost agricultural production a program termed “Agro-processing, Productive Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support Project( APPEALS), over 1,700 farmers and various cooperatives have been profiled and listed.
Another initiative of Gov. Ugwuanyi worthy of mention here is the Akwuke market garden, established for the production of ornamental plants, orchard seedlings and vegetable seeds. Other developmental strides aimed at improving the state’s agricultural output include; the development of 2000 hacteres of FADAMA farmlands in the six agricultural zones of the State for youths, women in rice production, and establishment of Nsukka Pepper seed multiplication farms.
Further to these efforts, Gov.Ugwuanyi under the supervision of the State Ministry of Agriculture approved the construction of borehole and public convenience at Asata mine road farm, the purchase of improved breed of animal for research (sheep, goat, grass cutter, quail, fishpond, beehive etc) and the raising of 46,500 oil palm seedlings (Tenera).
Improving life and well-being of his people remains the utmost concern and focus of Gov.Ugwuanyi’s administration. In him,we have seen pronouncements been met with actions and fulfilment.
