Covid-19 Variant: Boris Johnson Orders Fresh Lockdown In UK

In other to contain the new variant of COVID-19 disease, the United Kingdom Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has again ordered a fresh lockdown till mid-February.

Speaking on Monday night, January 4, Johnson warned that citizens must again remain at their houses for the main time just as they were ordered to do during the first wave of the dreaded disease in March 2020.

According to the politician, the decision was necessary as there is now more pressure on hospitals in the UK from the novel virus than at any time since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The development is coming at the time Britain is ramping up its vaccination program to become the first nation to start the application of the vaccine developed by Oxford University and drugmaker AstraZeneca, Bibian Anekwe News understands.

“As I speak to you tonight, our hospitals are under more pressure from COVID than at any time since the start of the pandemic,” said Boris Johnson. The Prime Minister declared that there were “tough, tough” weeks to come in the fight against COVID-19.

Bibian Anekwe News understands that the fresh regulations which are set to come into effect now will have all primary and secondary schools and colleges shut down for physical learning except for kids of some key workers. Also, tertiary institution students will not be returning for their lecture until at least mid-February.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday evening, 4th January 2021, confirmed 1,204 new cases of Coronavirus disease infection in Nigeria.

The new cases of COVID-19 infection were confirmed via a statement on the official Twitter handle of the health agency, Bibian Anekwe News reports.
