The congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State to elect party’s standard flag bearers in the February scheduled local government elections might have come and gone, but the sweet memories of that exercise have continued to linger on. Reactions had continued unabated by the discerning members of the public to applaud an exercise so clinically executed against the naysayers counsel and evil dispositions. Against evil minded people’s expectations, the just concluded PDP local council congresses that produced the flag bearers of the party in the forthcoming local government election in Enugu state was a masterstroke.
The peaceful conduct of the exercise still dominate discourses throughout the state and beyond. All the stakeholders unanimously felt at ease with His Excellency, Governor Ugwuanyi’s masterstroke formular for conducting the election.
Prior to the exercise, the people’s governor was on record to have instructed all power brokers across the 17 local government areas of the state to ensure that true democracy is enthroned by not interfering with the smooth conduct of the election.
His specific instruction was aimed at giving the power back to the people. Let the people determine who governs them and who represents them at the local councils. As a leader of the party in the state, Rt. Hon. Ugwuanyi did not just dish out instructions and sit back at Lion building, he followed it up as he addressed all key players in their various ranks to adhere to the consensus protocols.
Then came the Congress days, and the people adhered to his advisory and it paid off. The testimonies of goodwill that trailed the outcome of the primaries were enough evidence that Ugwuanyi has derived the almighty formular for entrenchment of democracy in the hinterlands of the state.
In the 1st republic, old Anambra state had the sterling achiever as governor in Sen. Jim Nwobodo. In this 4th republic, Enugu has discovered in governor Ugwuanyi another historic innovator in the art of good governance and social re-engineering. A hero of democracy with uncommon wits and tacts. A champion of internal democracy that blazes the trail for other governors to emulate. His people will continue to relish the memory of that violent-free election. May God continue to bless our Governor in Jesus name, Amen…
