It won’t be a questionable assertion that it takes more than yes to be consistently disciplined as a leader in our immediate environment. This implies that having a politician who musters the moral sufficiency and back-up to do the right thing in a society where some elements take delight in engineering chaos, nuisance and horrible antecedents is quite a rare event
Nonetheless, the people of ENUGU State in the face of the reality on ground with regards to the person of Gov. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, the number one citizen of the state will have reasons to stand tall as the governor has continued to display the tasteful embroidery of his humanity in his humble dispensation of his responsibilities and duties. His recent decision to excercise his right of prerogative of mercy in pursuant of section 175 and 212 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended has once again spoken volume of his love and care for his subjects. Gburu Gburu has dramatised that the torture meted to Mr. Ede Ekene at Nsukka Prison has a way of injuring his body; the governor has demonstrated that the hardship experienced by Mr Obi Simon at Oji River correctional facility has a way of giving him some sleeplessness
Gov.Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has actually proven that the hunger and hopelessness faced by Mr Oluchukwu Nwobodo at Enugu prison has a way of furnishing him with ulcer and creates sordid imagery in his mindest. By making such a timely interference in the sentence of twenty-five (25) inmates from Nsukka, Oji River and Enugu Correctional institutions will go a long way in stamping his character as a sympathetic and empathetic leader overflowing with UBUNTU
Through this act of compassion, Gburu Gburu has in effect, INTER ALIA, done the following
(A.) Pardoned the beneficiaries of the offences that led them to prisons and ensured that they shall not be tried again for such offences
(B.) Just like the Mosaic Law cleansed the beneficiaries of such rare act of all their iniquities, impunities and impurities, thereby turning them to NOVUM HOMO (new men) without any tint of guilt
(C.) Returned all the properties probably ceased from the beneficiaries
(D.) Waived all the punishment directed towards the beneficiaries as propounded by the court of law
As a leader, the governor while performing his quasi-judicial function will be honoured for being considerate, personable and thoughtful for undertaking such move when some leaders would ordinarily believe that withholding such prerogative of mercy would make them more powerful. IFEANYI UGWUANYI has demonstrated that a powerful soul is not just the one that pushes people down but the one who lifts the fallen up and without speaking from both sides of the mouth, I wish to infer that in peace building, one should not undermine the efficacy of tolerance, understanding, respect and forgiveness as mandatory ingredients and Gburu Gburu with his embellishments of UBUNTUISM is not the man to be found wanting
Therefore, without any form of prevarication, we once again applaud His Excellency, Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi for his mercifulness and selfless services to his people
