Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s love for grassroot democracy was felt more practically in the just concluded local government elections in the state. Having oversaw a free, fair and credible election, he glamorously organised a swearing-in ceremony held on Thursday, 3rd day of March 2022 which echo will continue to memorably reverberate beyond our time and space.
The heavy attendance of all stakeholders of the state politics bears witness to Gov. Ugwuanyi’s goodwill among his people. Michael Okpala Square, venue of the event was filled to the brim. The guests cut across women group, party faithfuls, legislators, civil society organizations, Elder statesmen, youth organisations, trade union leaders and private sector executives etc.
It was an outpouring of their support for the governor and the new team elected to work with him at the grassroot levels. Once again, His Excellency has demonstrated his uncommon leadership charisma.
This must have informed the many hushed voices routing for an Ugwuanyi presidency. Being a multiple award winner for good governance in many sectors, including health, youths and sports, works and housing etc, nobody can fault these patriotic Nigerians advocating that he becomes the next President of Nigeria.
Their only wish is that he replicates his exploits in Enugu at the national stage. And Nigeria would be transformed from third world to first world. A feat for which Lee Kuan Yew was immortalized.
As a governor with transformation vision that turned Enugu into an investment-friendly state, Ugwuanyi in his exhortation to the newly sworn-in LG Chairmen charged them to listen to the yearnings of their people, by being proximate to them.
Instructing them to hit the ground running in the delivery of democratic dividends to their constituents, he charges them to reside in their various constituencies to activate the rural economy and improve the security of their neighbourhoods.
He himself has been a living example of leaders who feel the pulse of their people. He was so close to his people in that on the fateful night when fire engulfed INEC office at Obollo afor, he arrived the venue of the incident at the dead of the night to be at the forefront of mitigating the damage.
His Excellency is a shepherd that smells like his sheep. The tenderness of his heart gives validation to his title, “The People’s Governor.” And his remarks to the new council chairs indicates that he wants them to emulate him.
