Gone are the days when the glory of government sonship hovered greatly over civil servants of every cadre, the aura stung them like bees as they go about their private and public lives. For the so fortunate ones whose experience and vast knowledge tipped them over others, life is a solitary voyage demanding no unreasonable strive and unbridled crave for vain possession but live well meaningfully. This realm of civil servants is characterized by humility, level-headedness, foresight, impeccable hygiene and steadfastness to public obligation.
The confidence and discipline with which they bore shoulders high, unfurling sparkling dentition (even when domestic tribulations tickles their countenance) as they trade with the larger citizens, swayed as well as inspired very many people to enlist into the league someday.
But, governments of then were on all fours on its constitutional mandate to improve socio-economic prospects of the citizenry of which shelter is a condition sine qua non to the enjoyment of other legion juicy perks of democractic governance.
Today, that very burning desire to enlist in the public services has waned asymmetrically for degrees of courses which if left to fester unattended would definitely sweep away relics of smouldering interest in few patriotic citizens who hunger to give back to the society that breeded them. Who can despise opulence? certainly none. Every school leaver quickly shrug away from active civil service seeing the penniless and homelessness of their parents.
Government should at all reasonable time and in the capacity of her treasury shelter civil servants who have dedicated most their years in her service. The disturbing incidents of impecuniousness hounding civil servants who after nagging years retire into homelessness is a call for concern. Worst hit is the military personnels who though staked their lives on the altar of nationhood, however by dint of fate bounced by the clattering gallows, those stuttering shiny metals of terror. What become of those whose blood declined to honor the field of death as they trudge home with no sheerest hope of a home to call theirs chaffed by near insolvency.
Studies have over time shown that providing the public servants with such basic necessities as housing, promotes professionalism, efficiency and responsiveness; and extinguishes proclivities to reprehensible corruption technics and irreligious extortion of populace unlucky civil servants resort to square up to home bills. This no doubt has contributed to putrid trajectory of the system and consequent generation of disaffection amongst the people.
Against this backdrop, the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation under the able command of Hon. Chukwuemerlie Agu deserves lofty laudits for measuring up to expectations in housing Enugu State government workers. Agu is just making Enugu proud among comity of states well run Estate localization and development geared towards conferring ownership of houses to workers of humble earnings.
As beguiling as envisaged, new Coal City satellite Estate under construction recently inspected by the “never say never” governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi proximate to New Market bridge, Ugwuonye Ama Enugu with 750 units combination of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom bungalows with protracted repay packages for civil servants while 4250 units comes in batches culminating into 5000 units long sanctioned by the governor.
One may keep floundering why governor Ugwuanyi’s operation house civil servants particularly the realm of lower rung income earners?
The response sounds not unfamiliar to people of His Excellency hometown who are immediate beneficiaries of his philanthropic disposition even prior to his conscription into politics to shelter anyone sharing space with him.
