There is no cheery news anywhere in the land. The parlours state of the economy and the quadruple inflation index has rapidly gained prominence so much so that man’s existence is this part of the globe is greatly threatened. Food security has suddenly become an issue in a nation with rich arable lands for robust agricultural enterprise. The protein needs of the people are threatened in equal proportion caused partly due to successive government ill measured approach to agro based enterprises and largely to what could be regarded as the greatest menace of the century. The devastating impact of farmers /Herders crisis have left a yawning gap in food and animal rearing. Many a farmer have had to abandon their duty posts for fear of dear lives and avoid being killed by the evil marauders in sheepskin. It is worrisome that the central government with it’s massive war chest of security apparatus appears to be helpless in the face of the current inbrogolio to rein in the criminals traversing the States cape. Prices of food crops and other agricultural products have suddenly hit the roof top, so much so that the common man in the society is barely scraping existence.
Another critical issue which must not escape mention here is the almost century disinterest by growing children in agricultural enterprise. Gone are the years when agricultural ventures are made compulsory for all categories of pupils and students in public schools. Fast forward to the recent licensing and proliferation of privately owned schools, the culture of inculcating in the young minds the tenets of agriculture as a catalyst for sustainable development further worsened. Some of these private schools operate in a rented apartment with no land area for recreation talk less of farming enterprise. Over time, their counterparts in the public schools rather than maintain this agricultural curriculum, attempted chasing shadows by copying the highlife styles of the private schools. The result is the pall of disillusionment cast in the area of agriculture by growing children who only desired a high flying white collar job after their education. What a pity!
It is therefore heart warming to observe the efforts of the Ugwuanyi led administration to reinvent agricultural enterprise in public schools via the intervention of the ENSUBEB and UBEC. These are two critical agencies of Dr. Ugwuanyi administration positioned to reaffirm his good governance objectives. There is no doubt that Hon. Ikeje Asogwa is to ENSUBEB what Lionel Messi is to the round leather game of football. Hon. Asogwa like his boss understands his mandate in ENSUBEB clearly and is more than prepared to march words with actions. Honorable Asogwa has been in the news and for the right reasons too in recent time. It is predictable that with his recent flag off to inculcate farming attitudes among the growing population in public schools including animal husbandry, fisheries and the like, Enugu children will never be the same again and food insecurity may be on it’s way from the land of Enugu sooner than later. People are already grooving that Enugu state may add another sobriquet to the coal city state as another food basket of the nation if the current measures are sustained. It is therefore important to believe in the administration of governor Ugwuanyi who is ever poised to make his good governance objectives realizable.
