Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) is a commission set up by Federal government of Nigeria to oversea the activities of primary Schools in Nigeria. This was during administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as executive president of Nigeria. The aim of the commission is to ensure quality education at primary school level nation wide. The government saw the need for proper and sound up bringing of a child which will have effect on him or her through out his/her life.
In Enugu state here, the commission is currently headed by Chief Ikeje Asogwa (Ide Iheaka). It is their responsibility to provide quality education to pupils. They hire, remunerate, appraise, promote, discipline and dismiss primary school teachers. They also create and build schools and renovate old ones. It is also their responsibility to inspect schools regularly to ensure compliance to standard. They provide teaching aids, needed fix assets and manpower for primary schools in Enugu state.
There have been construction of school blocks in primary in Enugu state. Almost in every primary school in Enugu state there is a UBEC building either in primary School. This have tremendously improve the quality of pupils that pass through the schools. The teachers are now more relaxed to teach. School libraries have also been equipped for better performance of both the teachers and students. This partnership is yielding dividends because over 500 school blocks have been constructed in various schools in Enugu state. Almost all primary schools in Enugu state have a UBEC building. Under a condusive environment, learning become fun and easily assimilates. Gone are the days pupils sit under mango trees and places there books on bare sand in Enugu state. Gone are the day you can see the sky clearly from the roof of school buildings in Enugu state. Gone are the days pupils cluster in one building from primary one to primary six. I remember my days in primary school, so many of us read under mango tree and placed our books on our laps to write. Today the story is entirely different because of Gov Ugwuanyi effective partnership with UBEC. I went to my child’s school at independence layout primary school 1 and was suprise. The primary school is very beautiful including where I read. Gov Ugwuanyi have transformed many primary schools. This have made private schools highly unattractive in Enugu state. There is massive withdrawals of pupils from private schools back to public school. This is because the quality of public school products have greatly improved. The teachers in primary Schools have stopped complaining too. The teaching aids are there and the atmosphere is very condusive. Prompt payment of salary have also made many private schools teachers to switch to public school whenever opportunity comes. The foot prints of Gov Ugwuanyi in primary Schools in Enugu state is indelible. What so many governor’s could not do even with stress, he is doing it with ease.
Our education loving governor, we say kudos. Enugu state is really in the hand of God.
