When Gov Ugwuanyi came into power in 2015, Enugu State fire Services was just there but not doing much due largely to lack of motivation on the part of government and inadequate fire fighting equipments. Then were the days when you will call them for a fire incident and they will tell you that they have no water or they have no serviceable fire truck to respond to the emergency. On one occasion, report have it that a major complain was the absence of a single driver on ground to respond to an emergency. It was as funny and bad as that.
When Ugwuanyi came on board, he did a quick and positive reorganization and repositioning in Enugu State fire Services. He promptly equipped them and expanded them as well and we are reaping the benefits today. Gov Ugwuanyi met three fire stations in Enugu State that were poorly equipped. They were functioning far below expectation.
Today, the history is different. Enugu State today have over five well equipped fire stations in Enugu, Nsukka, 9th mile, Ogbete market, Ozalla, Orba, Oji River and still counting. Each of this stations are equipped with fire fighting trucks, fire house, staff quarters, bore holes, safety kits, fire fighting equipments, well trained and motivated staff etc.
There have been timely responses to fire disasters since Ugwuanyi came into office. The fire stations are evenly distributed in all parts of the state. It is no longer the time when fire trucks must come from Enugu or Nsukka. Today fire trucks are very close to you.
The fire incident that occurred at INEC office Obollo Afor last week got prompt response from Orba Fire Station. The fire incidence that happened at INEC Zonal office in Enugu on Monday got immediate response from Enugu fire station. If there is any such occurrance in any part of the state, there is a close by fire station to quench the inferno.
The presence of good roads and experienced staff have helped much in quenching fire disasters in Enugu.
The General Manager of Enugu State Fire Service Engr Okwudili Oha have been doing wonderfully well. He has made best use of human and material resources at his disposal and it has paid off and still does.
Gone are the days when fire trucks are competing with commercial water tankers on who supplies more water at project sites and households at a price. Gone are the days front of fire stations are converted to mini markets. Gone are the days staff of fire stations comes towards month end and sign up attendance register. They earn salary without doing the work. The GM knows his onions and is doing absolutely well.
Gov Ugwuanyi’s positive actions in Enugu State fire service have been rewarding. They effectively fumigated all nooks and crannies of Enugu and environs at the dawn of Covid 19 in 2020. They fumigated markets, schools, public places, etc.
Gov Ugwuanyi knows that Enugu State needs such equipments and have timely provided it.
We can proudly say that Enugu State is in the hand of God.
