An Igbo saying has it thus: “onye gba akpu-ukwu ma ebe o n’ afu ya ufu ma karisia ” (he who wears the shoes knows where it pains him most). Another Igbo proverb spells, “Onye anoghi ngbe e nyiri ozu, n’esi n’ ukwu abo ya” (he who was absent at the burial, exhumes the remains from its legs side. Please, I plead you allow me to assert on this note that the easiest job to do is the job of an armchair critic. It is only His Excellency, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, his team and few Enugu residents who have tasted leadership, no matter how little, can tell the pains of leadership, especially, such leadership that aims at reaching out to the governed, almost individually, door to door, no matter how little the fresh air of the prevailing good governance touches a resident. Hence, the coming of the trending GburusCare Initiative launched by Enugu state Government, through the office of the Technical Assistant to the Executive Governor of Enugu State on Health, Hon Darl Ugwuegbe who doubles as DG of GburusCare Initiative (GCI).
GburusCare Initiative (GCI) is a child of necessity born to cater for the health challenges of the aged in the rural areas, especially, those who are financially incapacitated to take themselves to the hospitals. The government of the day, through GCI tends reduce preventable death rate and increase healthy living in the rural areas. Hon Darl Ugwuegbe, DG of GburusCare Initiative programme, in an interview, said that this initiative is aimed at treating at least 3,000 aged persons in its first phase. It is meant to tour the 17 Local Government Areas. Darl Ugwuegbe confirmed that GburusCare Initiative has already got more than 1,000 beneficiaries (and the number keeps increasing).
GburusCare Initiative is a humanitarian program that explains that Governor Ugwuanyi didn’t come for the rich or the wealthy alone, but, for the poor masses, the downtrodden, the forgotten, and the less privileged in Enugu. This can also be proven by the infrastructural development initiatives of Gov Ugwuanyi. Anybody following Governor Ugwuanyi’s developmental strides will affirm to the truism that governor Ugwuanyi channels his road construction projects to the rural areas which usually makes some people in town mistake that the Governor isn’t working. But, it is not true. The Governor is working tirelessly to have an Enugu state where every nooks and crannies of the state will become a full fledged city by the on-going sporadic urbanization of the rural areas.
In the exact words of the DG, “the GburusCare Initiative thrives on the strength and services of health and medical professionals to live up to its mandate of driving health awareness to rural areas and also attend to the health needs of Enugu state senior citizens”.
To sum this article up, all we owe Gburugburu, a leader whose intention is to make sure that good governance goes round, a leader who listens to the heartbeats of the helpless, the weak, the downtrodden, the forgotten, the incapacitated ones in Enugu state… All we owe him, is prayer and support, in our (own) little ways, because, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
