Few years back, it appeared security around the nation was weak. Presently, it appears security in Nigeria has collapsed. The police authorities seem to have been wholly overwhelmed by the security situation in the country. Infact, this is one of the worst time to be a security personnel in Nigeria. Things have got so bad that many security personnels don’t wear thier uniforms openly again. Many cannot walk in the street freely. Even those living outside the barracks feel a little uncomfortable for fear of attack. Many police stations and millitary formations have been attacked, severally. Homes and farm lands are not safe. People are living in fears, tension here and there. Nowhere is safe.
In the midst of all these tension and fear everywhere, there is shelter from the storm somewhere in the same country. There is safety, there is peace, there is understanding. Though it may sound unbelievable, but it is true.
How did it happen? What is the secret behind such a contrast in the same country? That is the magic of Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in Nigeria. Thou Nigeria is boiling, Enugu is safe and stable. Whenever the man that knows the job is in the saddle, everything becomes easy and simple. That is what has played out in Enugu State.
But what is it that governor Ugwuanyi is doing differently in Enugu State? What Ugwuanyi is doing is very simple. In mathematics it is called ‘going from the known to unknown’. It is using what you have to get what you need. What he did is to engage more hand privately in securing his state. In a radio programme in one of the popular radio station in Enugu on Wednesday (23/6/2021), Hon Chukwu Obasi member house committee on security in Enugu State House of Assembly broke the news. He said that Enugu State employed 10 persons as forest guards and another 20 persons as vigilant security personnel in each of the 260 political wards in Enugu State. This is a total of 7800 security personnels. This excludes community vigilante groups that exists in all the rural communities in Enugu State. This excludes the neighborhood watch groups that exists in most of the streets in urban areas. This excludes the security spy of traditional rulers in all the kingdoms in Enugu State. This excludes security informants of local government chairmen.
The whole of South Eastern states may not have up to 7000 policemen, yet Enugu State alone have over 7000 security personnels. There are private security companies here and there in Enugu providing security to companies, households, corporate bodies, etc. Why wouldn’t Enugu be so secured. If presidency will take a cue from Enugu state and employ 500 person per local government in Nigeria, that will give us 387000 vigilante staff. It will reduce crime in Nigeria drastically. Funding it will not be much problem as even corporates bodies are ready to help.
The level of security in Enugu have boosted investors confidence in Enugu State. Crime rate have drastically reduced too. So many rich men have relocated to Enugu due to security reasons. This have made Enugu State the most secured state in Nigeria. Enugu is also the most peaceful state in Nigeria. Really, Enugu State is in the hands of God.
