As pointed out in the first article with the above subject, appraising Governor Ugwuanyi’s developmental strides in the last 6 years would not be a mean task. The entire landscape will never contain his achievements if one will endeavor to embark on a futile attempt to document and chronicle them. However, for the benefit of those who do not believe in the visible marks of our dear Governor, a few more points to conclude this epistle will suffice.
¶ Social harmony and sustainable peace : Governor Ugwuanyi administration is reputed to promote enduring social harmony across the state. It is on record that the cordial relationship existing between the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary in the State is second to none and have encouraged the policies of government to add value and impactful to the economic wellbeing of the citizens.
As a pragmatic leader, his government embarked on the construction of 14 new Court Buildings and Open Registries in the Judicial Divisions and Magisterial Districts across the State. These legacy projects is first of its kind in the entire South East Zone and largest intervention in the Judiciary arms in the past 20years. Under his social harmony principles, governor Ugwuanyi has been paying the state workers as at when due and one of the first Governor in Nigeria to accept to pay the minimum wage of Thirty Thousand Naira to it’s workforce. In addition, governor Ugwuanyi has consistently paid the 13th month salary to the workers seen as a bold encouragement to appreciate the commitment of the workers in the state. He created an enabling environment for business to thrive in the State and have made his economic policies people oriented one. In his political appointments, he ensured that no section of the State is marginalized.
As a people oriented governor, Governor Ugwuanyi practically rescued a brutalized house help Miss Nneoma Nnadi from the hands of her foster parents. He did not only approve the award of scholarship up to university level to the poor girl but directed the State scholarship board to act immediately. He further directed the State Ministry of Gender Affairs and Social Development to fully pay for the best medical care of the child and provided some cash to the victim parents for their upkeep. This governor is truly heaven’s gift. The government of governor Ugwuanyi frowns on dehumanization of people and that is why he ordered that the foster parents of the house help be prosecuted without further delay. In another development, a fire incident that occurred at Ugboezeji, Abakpa-Nike and a Petrol Station in Trans Ekulu, where many people were affected caught the attention of our amiable governor who upon receiving the news, despatched a government delegation to the scene of the incident led by the speaker Enugu State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Edwin Ubosi to sympathize with the victims. The governor in his usual philanthropic disposition gave the five tenants of the burnt building N 500,000 and the landlord received N1 million. The victims were very grateful to the humanitarian gesture of governor Ugwuanyi and pray for Gods blessings upon his life. The governor also replaced the tricycles and a bus burnt during the inferno at Trans Ekulu owned by John Obalezi and Sunday Ugwu who lost every hope but their hope was restored in a few days after the incident and all to the magnanimity of governor Ugwuanyi who sees humanity as his first point of call in his leadership disposition in the State. The governor has continued in giving hope to the hopeless in the State.
To ensure that government at the grassroots are performing their functions he inaugurated an 11-man committee on Local Government Staff Audit and Biometrics Data Capturing Exercise to address the irregularities associated with cash flow in the local government which undermine its progress. The committee is headed by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi among others. The aim is to flush out ghost workers and wastage that has become a regular occurrence at the third tier of government. As a man of integrity, he inaugurated an 8-man administrative committee on the Completion of Enugu State Basic Education Board projects in the primary schools of Enugu State while echoing a stiffer penalty for any contractor or officials of government who engaged in sharp practices that has undermined the good state of our primary and secondary schools. In his word, he disclosed that “no responsible government would allow such conditions to continue to exist in its schools” adding that “we considered it urgent and imperative; to constitute a committee to investigate this ugly situation and recommend the most appropriate measures to ensure that it is promptly and completely reversed”.
In all, Enugu State under Gburugburu has taken lead towards the promotion of accountability and due process for socio-economic emancipation and political advancement. With these legacies of the current administration, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka saw it and acclaimed that indeed Gburugburu is working especially in Rural Areas. Ndi Enugu, “Agu Ole ka Mmadu ga Egbu Ozaba Ogbu Agu”? Governor Ugwuanyi has done well and it is our obligation to reciprocate his kind gesture in 2023 by following his political footprints.
