The current administration in Enugu State has witnessed a remarkable level of financial discipline, prudent management of lean resources of the State, probity, transparency and accountability developed as our amiable governor desires in keeping the State in a track of steady development and socio-economic and political progress. This Mr. Fulfilment (Governor Ugwuanyi) promised in 2015 and fulfilled when he stated that “in addition, every revenue-generating agency of government should be ready to generate and remit revenues to fund governments development efforts. Likewise, individuals and corporate entities should henceforth start paying tax as defaulters will not be counted as friends of Enugu State. But one thing I must assure you is that every kobo you put into the coffers of government will be utilized transparently and in a way that adds value to your lives”.
Since the inception of the current administration in Enugu State, governor Ugwuanyi effected some changes by restructuring, re-engineering and re-invigoration of the State economy for better growth through research and innovative ideas that plugged all leakages and enhanced service to the people of the State.
Following the consequential effect of the downturn in the oil sector has made government at all level in Nigeria to start struggling for survival and in other to render a selfless service to the people, the governor adopted a new measure of managing the finance of the State in a more prudent manner. Enugu State is one of the State the downturn in oil did not affect much because the governor established a new model which boosted the State IGR so that it will compliment with the monthly allocation from the federal government. He plugged all leakages through which money is being diverted by public office holders.
He changed the parochial idea of seeing political offices as an avenue for enrichment into service to the people; and it is on this basis that some people who want to suck the State dry are not happy with his administration style of financial discipline hence constituted opposition to the governor and his administration.
To ensure that government at the grassroots is performing the function they were created, governor Ugwuanyi inaugurated 11-man committee on Local Government Staff Audit and Biometrics Data Capturing Exercise to address the irregularities associated with cash flow in the local government which undermine its progress. The committee is headed by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi among others. The aim is to flush out ghost workers and wastes that has been an occurring decimal in the local administration.
However, as a man of integrity, he inaugurated an 8-man administrative committee on the Completion of Enugu State Basic Education Board projects in the primary schools of Enugu State with a powerful worded warning to contractors or officials of government who engaged in sharp practices which undermine the good state of our primary and secondary school will be handled accordingly by his administration.
In his word, he disclosed that “no responsible government would allow such conditions to continue to exist in its schools” adding that “we considered it urgent and imperative; to constitute a committee to investigate this ugly situation and recommend the most appropriate measures to ensure that it is promptly and completely reversed”.
In all, Enugu State under Gburugburu has taken lead towards the promotion of accountability and due process for socio-economic emancipation and political advancement. Nigeria will be great when powers of governance are returned to the people and allow the people to hold their leaders accountable as exemplified in the administration of governor Ugwuanyi; only by this that the common people will rejoice and have sense of belonging, participate fully in politics and inclusively help in solving societal problems.
