Gunmen on Sunday shot dead nine passengers, including three children on the Birnin Gwari-Kaduna highway
Daily Trust reports that the gunmen attacked the victims in Zankoro area, while they were heading to a wedding in Doka village, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
One of the travellers, Datti, who assisted in transporting the bodies, told Daily Trust that six people died instantly.
The Birnin Gwari Progressives Union (BEPU) said the gunmen abducted an unidentified number of people in a roadblock and opened fire indiscriminately.
BEPU President Barrister Salisu Haruna said 11 people were also abducted in Dan Kungi village on Sunday.
He complained that the bandits had intensified their attacks in the area where they were killing and kidnapping people without facing any resistance.
According to him, in the past two weeks, more than 40 people have been abducted by gunmen in Birnin Gwari, so he asked the Kaduna State Government to deploy security operatives on the Birnin Gwari-Kaduna road.
Daily Trust sought comment from Kaduna State Police Spokesperson, Mohammed Jagile, but he was attending a meeting until the compilation of this report.
The Kaduna State Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, could not be reached for comment.
