In his treatise of Governance and Security in Enugu state, Mr. Nwachukwu Orji noted that “Governance can be defined as the act of governing. It depicts the process of overseeing the responsible, legal, ethical, transparent and effective achievement of national or organisational goals”. Governance is ideally what a government does. Government exists to initiate and execute policies for the common good of the people in a given society. To lend credence to the principles of good governance Frank Herbert penned the following… “Good governance never depends upon laws, but upon the personal qualities of those who govern. The machinery of government is always subordinate to the will of those who administer that machinery. The most important element of government, therefore, is the method of choosing leaders”.
The year 2015 will go down in the annals of the history of Enugu state when it was time to choose the best of the best to occupy the seat of government in Enugu state at the Lion Building. By divine providence and the will of the people, Rt. Honourable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi triumphed. Six years down the line and counting, Enugu state is firmly in the hands of God with the manner and zeal, Dr. Ugwuanyi has taken the business of governance ranging from humanitarian, government of inclusion no matter party ideology or affiliation, infrastructural development and sundry issues.
During the 2021 Armed forces remembrance day celebrations held nation wide on Friday, the 15th day of January, the humane nature of Governor Ugwuanyi was once again demonstrated when he donated a whopping sum of five million Naira to select widows of fallen heroes aside other food items.
Governor Ugwuanyi who handed over a cheque of N5 million to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Lasisi Adegboye, for onward distribution to the widows, at a brief ceremony held at the Parade Ground, Abakpa Cantonment, Enugu, also made symbolic presentations of the food items to selected wives of the fallen heroes.
The Governor equally used the occasion of the brief ceremony to support the skills acquisition project of the Nigeria Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), 82 Division Chapter, with the sum of N5 million and made bulk purchase of the products of the trainees.
The NAOWA, 82 Division Chapter’s skills acquisition programme, according to its President and wife of the GOC, Mrs. Rasheedat Adegboye, is aimed at empowering the soldiers’ families with skills in vocational training for financial empowerment.
It was the turn of the GOC, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Adegboye, to eulogize the sterling qualities of the caring Governor Ugwuanyi.
The GOC thanked Governor Ugwuanyi for deeming it necessary to identify with the military to pray for repose of their departed colleagues, those who are in the frontline as well as the nation while expressing gratitude to the governor for all his support over the years to 82 Division and members of the Armed Forces in Enugu State.
It is important to mention that Gov. Ugwuanyi had while taking note of the plight of 95 widows during the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, promised that his administration will intervene to ameliorate their sufferings, and consequently made good his promise by releasing the sum of N19 million to the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, for disbursement to the affected women to start businesses.
As count down to the 2023 general election hots up and the debate continues on who takes over the responsibility of governance when Mr. Fulfilment must have served out his final term in office as Governor, it is important to remind ourselves and especially those angling for political positions that the spiritual doctrine of good governance which Ugwuanyi embodied should continue to be our lot. These political gladiators must be able to ask themselves and answer most satisfactorily in the words of Pope Francis “… Do I love my people in order to serve them better? Am I humble and do I listen to everybody, to diverse opinions in order to choose the best path” ?.
Anything short of this spiritual renewal in the minds of those struggling to govern Enugu state will not augur well for Ndi Enugu.
May God Almighty in His infinite grace and goodness grant Ndi Enugu even a better version of Gburu-Gburu if for nothing else but to glory in the confidence we have in His capacity to hold us firmly in His Big Hands.
