Access to potable and safe drinking water had often posed tremendous challenge to successive governments in Enugu State both in the urban and rural areas. Many rural communities have remained without potable or safely managed drinking water source for a very long time. It can safely be argued that only about 42% of households have access to safe water before Governor Ugwuanyi came on board.
Recent statistics also revealed that about 28% relied on contaminated streams, rivers and unprotected Wells to meet their daily water needs for domestic and commercial purposes.
Water remains a basic necessity for both animals and plants. In line with Governor Ugwuanyi’s avowed commitment to drive a wholesome government in the state, there has been massive investment to secure this all important basic necessity for the greater good of the people in spite of the limited resources available to the government. The investment therefore translated to the comprehensive rehabilitation of the 9th mile Crash Programme with solar powered boreholes to ensure steady supply from Oji River, Ajali, and Iva Water Station. To ensure speedy delivery and rapid response to the yearnings of the people, the administration awarded a contract of 600 million to FordMarx Nigeria Limited. The good news is that people in the metropolitan areas of the State are now enjoying a sustained clean water supply and the administration is working assiduously to extend the gesture within the suburb areas of the State too.
It is instructive too that the resolve of the present administration to ensure Rural-Urban Sustainable Water Renewal was borne out of Governor Ugwuanyi’s programed vision and mission to bequeath Enugu State with a legacy yet unequaled in good governance. He has therefore proven over time that he is not just committed to raising the bar in quality leadership but one that will endure. Today, boreholes has been sunk in most of the Rural areas, while Solar panels were provided to power the boreholes in view of the epileptic power supplies. This technological input has ensured that the rural communities where the boreholes are provided enjoys round the clock supply of safe drinking water for their needs. This has equally ensured the up scaling of the living standards in the rural areas while the clean water supplies were able to stem the risks of water related diseases among the people. The administration has extended this gesture by constructing one motorized and seven solar-powered water boreholes in some courts and markets in the rural areas of the state. The benefiting communities or markets includes Eke Ozzi Market, Ogurute, Enugu Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, Ezinese Community Square in Agbaja Umumba Ndiuno in Ezeagu, Nkwo Ibeagwa Aka Market, Igbo-Eze South LGA, Orba Market, Udenu LGA, Ogige Market Nsukka, Nsukka High Court and Magistrate Court respectively.
Thumbs up therefore must be given to the current administration of Rt.Hon.Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi for taking visible steps to ensure that the intractable water supply across the length and breath of the state is tackled wholesomely and once and forever. Truly, with Governor Ugwuanyi in the saddle, Enugu State will never leave the strong grip by God Almighty. Indeed Enugu State is globalizing and Governor Ugwuanyi has been confirmed a Rural Developer.
