There have been pockets of security skirmishes in our beloved state of Enugu in recent time which should agitate the minds of all men of goodwill. Just few days back, there was a ferocious attack by some unidentified gun men at Obeagu-Amechi road axis on some police operatives mounting road check which led to the death of about five of them in broad day light. About three weeks before that, a billionaire and business man Auto Ease CEO was assassinated in his house in Enugu. Around that time again, the Managing Director of Science Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) Akwuke Engr Samuel Nnadi) was assassinated also by unknown gun men close to centenary city junction. Not too long also there was sporadic shootings at Holy Ghost park Enugu which scared the wits out of the inhabitants of the area and the traders. The lists are endless. The question that readily comes to mind is why my state, why my beloved Enugu, the state of the headquarters of the Eastern heartland?.
There are rather too many questions than one could provide satisfactory answers to so many of them.
It is important however to note that no society is completely free from threats of insecurity and bad elements. It is equally important to understand how his Excellency, the governor of Enugu state have been able to manage the security situations as it were and how he has continued to respond to such issues as it rears it’s ugly head now and then. It might be ideal to situate what is happening in other states of the country to what is happening in Enugu. One would rather give Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi a big thumbs up for the excellent manner he has deescalated political turmoil and other potential security threats in the state. Truly, governor Ugwuanyi has proven to be a lover of peace and would stop at nothing to create an environment that would engender peace and ultimately shoo the trouble makers and the potential ones away.
One would therefore readily attest to the fact that in all the enumerated security skirmishes above, governor Ugwuanyi has often abandoned whatever it is that is occupying his time at the material moment to personally attend or access the situation as it were. Governor Ugwuanyi has often equated loss of a single life of his subject to the ebbing of his own life as a leader. That is why he is always seen in a sorrowful mood with eyes full of tears at the scene of such reported incidences. Governor Ugwuanyi could be considered a highly emotional leader who is ready to drop a tear at the drop of a hat especially when it concerns the security or welfare of his subjects. Such a patriotic leader of his people!.
Another important thing to be noted about governor Ugwuanyi in the management of the security issues as it were is his commitment to the issues of prevention of crime and criminality. Again, one would like to admit that some of the hoodlums terrorizing most states in the federation might not be residents of such states, but hired to go into such places sometimes in cahoot with the few criminal elements domiciled somewhere in such state to cause their havoc and bail. In other to prevent further occurrences, Gov Ugwuanyi have put all security outfits in the state on red alert to ensure that they frustrate any further move from the criminal elements. He has organized several security meetings with head of security agencies to put a stop to this nonsense. All hospitality industries in Enugu have been informed to let security agencies know of any suspicious person in their lodge. All vigilante and community police officers have also been briefed to be watchful. This is yielding fruitful results though a classified information.
Enugu state is still very peaceful and peace loving. There is a cohesive collaboration between security agencies and the people to ensure that hoodlums are identified and handled properly in Enugu State. All traditional rulers have also been reminded of their responsibility as the chief security officer of their kingdom and ensure maximum security. Gov Ugwuanyi have charged all political office holders to ensure that there is total security of lives and properties in their place of origin and abode. This has helped much in the area of peace building. May God continue to shield Ndi Enugu from the threats of the enemy because Enugu is clearly in the hands of God.
