Water is an essential element for life. From the beginning of human history, traced from the days of Adam, Noah, Elijah, Elisha, to mention but few Biblical Allusional references, water has always been viewed as a phenomenon interwoven with humankind and its existence. Human beings are nourished by water which is the primary building block of life. A scholar once said that there is no life without water. There is rarely a meaningful socio-economic development that can take place in an area without determined effort to improve the supply of water to its residents as a phenomenon that is critical to human existence. Water is a resource without substitute and paramount to our health, food security, energy future and ecosystem, according to Transparency International Global Corruption Report of 2008.
The relevance of water to Enugu residents can never be overemphasized. This is the reason the detractors of the government of the day who have been on their toes to make sure they confuse Ndi Enugu, having found out that there is absolutely nothing to hold our amiable, peace loving, project drunk, and ever workaholic governor to ransom, now resorted to cash in on the natural scarcity of water as a ploy to drag the golden image of the Governor, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi and his indomitable government to the mud, for no justifiable reason.
The Operation-Pull-Gburugburu-Down-syndrome peddlers have forgotten that Enugu state does not enjoy the same land structure or topography which other states like Imo state, Anambra, Abia and some other states surrounded by water have. They forgot that Enugu is blessed with coal which pose as one of the major impediments to digging out drinking water within Enugu. Unfortunately, the only area in Enugu where we can boast of clean water is 9th mile but even at that, one have to dig up to 360 fit before one can see clean water. Many landlords, have on their own decided to dig water for their tenants use but, after the whole painstaking process, even when it looks like the said borehole facility has been installed, coal usually blog it, causing hamper for easy flow of water beneath the ground.
Ndi Enugu, there are two major factors that can cause scarcity of water in our beautiful state, which include nature-produced factors and man made factors. One of the nature-induced factors include what we call “aridity”.
Aridity, in its strict sense, is a natural permanent imbalance in the water availability consisting in low average annual precipitation, with high spatial and temporal variability, resulting in overall low moisture and low carrying capacity of the ecosystems. Aridity may be defined through climatological indices such as the Thornthwaite moisture index, the Budyko radiation index of dryness, or the Unesco precipitation/evapotranspiration index (Sanderson, 1992). Under aridity, extreme variations of temperatures occur, and the hydrologic regimes are characterized by large variations in discharges, flash floods and large periods with very low or zero flows. One may argue that aridity is not the major cause for water scarcity in Enugu, I agree, but, the problem is still not government induced but nature induced factors such as the already stated coal blockage of waterflow from the ground. It is not caused by man, nor government, rather by natures imperfections. Nature blessed us with coal, which all always appreciate God almighty for, but, the same coal we are proud of is the major impediment causing water scarcity. Kindly make your research on this assertion.
But, one may quickly ask what Odoziobodo Gburus (the White Lion, Aguneche Ibe Ya) and his team are doing for improved availability of water in Enugu state? The government of the day has already declared state of emergency on the problem of water in Enugu state which is the reason for the appointment of a commissioner to fight water scarcity tooth-to-tooth. The commission has already set out to recruit hundreds of good brains in water related issues as members of staff for the corporation.
While considering the rate at which those peddling the water scarcity issue in the state as a case against Governor Ugwuanyi and his team of brilliant administrative generals, a person who hasn’t been to Enugu before would think that all the houses in all the streets and roads in Enugu had pipe-born water before our man of peace came into office in 2015. Water scarcity has been a chronic disease in Enugu even during military era, during His Excellency, former Gov Chimaroke Nnamani’s, during Gov Sullivan Chime’s time, why make it appear Governor Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi came into power, and destroyed existing water facilities in Enugu to deliberately impose hardship on his people? Like Julius Caesar of the Old, they have ganged together to gang-stab Governor Ugwuanyi to death over an age-long inherited challenge that his government has not rested for.
An attempt to make it appear like the scarcity of water in our dear state is caused by the state Government ably led by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is a slap on the intelligence of the educated elite in the state and very laughable on the part of the accusers. Next time anyone wants to blackmail Governor Ugwuanyi with water scarcity, kindly remind them that it is not a government-produced problem. Please, tell them that Gov Ugwuanyi led administration is fighting tooth and nail to put a total stop to water scarcity in the state.
Thank you. May God Bless Every Lover Good Governance Struggle of Gburugburu. May Your Individual Efforts Never be treated with disdain by those you suffer for.
