It is only a few individual that would concur that Leadership is not a business but a call to service.
Jesus Christ was an exemplary leader who placed his life for the redemption of mankind. The night of his (Jesus) crucifixion, he surrendered himself to God’s perfect plan thus praying: “Father, everything is possible with you; please take this cup of suffering away from me, yet I want your will to be done, not mine”.
In an amazing act of complete and total humility, just as the Holy Book recorded about Christ, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi (Gburugburu), surrendered to ndi Enugu as a servant Leader. The inclination of every leader is to try to stay in charge, be in control and be served. The governor of Enugu state remains humble to his people even in the midst of troubles.
I might be misunderstood, if I fail to back up my claims with evidence(s).
Weeks ago the INEC office at Obollo Afor in Udenu Local Government Area, was engulfed by fire :’:/-/:’ /’in the middle of the night. When the call came through the governor’s phone, I believe so many things must have ran through his mind. He refused to send his deputy, or any other person. He took charge, he took control positively. He knew he was Elected to serve ndi Enugu. He therefore took that positive decision to leave Enugu, the seat of government enroute Obollo, arriving only few hours to the beginning of another day and yanked off his personal comfort. Which leader would seem comfortable when his estate is in turmoil? I bet many a leader would be hamstrung to undertake the risk which Governor Ugwuanyi took that faithful night. But this is our Governor in whom we are all well pleased with his humility and candor.
Another critical crisis that shook the administration of Ugwuanyi in recent time was the new Artisan crisis which equally tested his political sagacity. Governor Ugwuanyi amply took charge and engaged all parties to the dispute with a view to de-escalating the crisis. Nothing untoward has happened, while engagements with all stakeholders have continued to ensure enduring peace which has become a hallmark of his administration.
The Governor holds the record for building the very first Chapel in the Lion Building (Government House). His belief in God has been demonstrated overtime. Little wonder everything which concerns God got his attention. What else could be more gratifying than seeing our humble servant leader welcome the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adebayo in Enugu recently for a pastoral visit. Ugwuanyi was at the airport to welcome him and enamored the people of Enugu State and the entire congregates of RCCG with his uncommon humility exhibited when the servant of God came calling.
It is important to stress that Gov Ugwuanyi is a firm believer in himself and his principles. When he started his trajectories in the health sector, it was with a clear vision to stem the rate of medical tourism by top government functionaries and the well to do in the society who can afford to pay for medical treatment abroad. As part of his efforts to reposition the state economy and save scarce foreign currency, he embarked on massive healthcare delivery system and reinvented the hospital management system that can compete favorably with the best in the world. All these efforts were geared towards stemming medical tourism.
Today, governor Ugwuanyi is getting treated in one of the many hospitals he built for Ndi Enugu whenever the need arises because he is also human who is bound to get ill.
Today, vast majority of our people are also taking advantage of the standard equipped hospital in Enugu and other places in the state, thereby saving the state of huge resources that can be channeled to other uses. Such is the vision of a charismatic leader who exudes vision for a better tomorrow and for his state.
The same journey played out in the education sector where governor Ugwuanyi dealt with the deplorable state of the sector by reinventing it to an enviable height. More school facilities have been constructed in addition to the rehab of the existing ones with new ICT equipments to boot for ease of teaching to the pupils and students. Governor Ugwuanyi is truly a factor to reckon with in governance. May his kind never lack again in Enugu State.
Truly, Enugu State is in the hands of God.
