When he shot into political limelight after the 2003 general election, little did the newly-elected House of Representatives member Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, representing Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constinuency of Enugu State expect to become one of the country’s leading political lights 18 years later.
Perhaps the manner of his win could give a hint of better days ahead for this accomplished Insurance Broker. In that election, he had thrashed the incumbent federal house member representing his federal constituency. That win, in a way, was a sign of better days ahead. Since then, Ugwuanyi has simply refused to disappear from the political scene.
Today, the Enugu State Governor finds himself right at the centre of “Nigerian politics”. Politicians have come and disappeared into oblivion. But the PDP South East party leader has simply become “too strong for defeat”.
For 12 years, he served as House of Reps member and he was the Chairman, House Committee on Marine Transport Ugwuanyi was a two term Chairman of house committee on Marine Transport. Ugwuanyi also held the position of Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Pensions where he helped enact the Pension Reform Act 2004.
During the 2015 election, Ugwuanyi would go for Enugu State Governor’s seat. Following his party’s primary election of 8 December 2014 in Enugu, Ugwuanyi won PDP’s gubernatorial ticket, which made him the State’s PDP Governorship Candidate for the 2015 General Elections which he won with a landslide.
In that election, the solidarity, support and goodwill from the people were so overwhelming that he became the most popular political leader to be elected governor of the state in a contest that was adjudged free and fair.
As an emerging political giant in the country, the soft-spoken governor confirmed his political muscle when he crushed his local rival Senator Ayogu Eze the second time in the 2019 gubernatorial race.
His development record as Enugu State Governor and the peaceful state of the State has helped boost his image.
In 9th of February 2021, due to his rising political profile, influence and his immeasurable contributions in the South East Zone, PDP adopted Gov Ugwuanyi as leader of PDP in the South East zone.
As a top political giant in the country, the 57-year-old could be preparing for his future life in politics after the end of his tenure as governor.
