Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state has been commended for his administration’s untiring efforts towards eradication of unemployment and youths restiveness in the State.
A female political activist, Rotarian (Mrs) Bibian Anekwe who addressed newsmen in Enugu yesterday said the recent recruitment of additional 1000 youths for the state’s Clean Team Project was remarkable. She said the project which started off with 1000 youths recruited from across the state, now boasts a total number to 2000 youths.
Anekwe who leads the Enugu Di’ N’akachukwu Movement, a women political solidarity group said Governor Ugwuanyi has, in his policies and pronouncements, shown immense commitment to human empowerment through various skills acquisitions and employment opportunities provided by the State Government. She said that the Clean Team program is unique as a way of meaningfully engaging the youths in Enugu state.
According to her “the scheme has made it possible for indigent youths whose parents could not sponsor their education to earn money and sponsor themselves”. The program provides the youths flexible 5-7am street cleaning jobs that enable them undertake their education simultaneously.
To underline the uniqueness of the program, Anekwe who hails from Eke in Udi Local Government Area, asked “where else in Nigeria do you have 2000 youths go to work by 5am, round up by 7am, earn good money to proceed with their education without hindrance?”
She emphasised that the present administration in Enugu is youth-friendly, adding that the bulk of the state’s Councillors as well as Ugwuanyi’s appointees, especially the Executive Assistants to the Governor and Community Liaison officers were youths numbering over 500.
Mrs. Anekwe emphasized that it was the desire of the state government to see that youth of the state are economically independent, productive and in a position to contribute to the growth and development of the State and Nigeria at large.
