The above were the exact platitudes which ensued from the cavity of the leading opposition figure in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye as he lent his voice to eulogize the peaceful dispositions of a leader whose first and second name spells peace. This kind remarks must not be lost on the peace possessed land of Enugu State whose major enterprise in the last couple of years since Ugwuanyi assumed power is socio-political harmony unspeakable. By Dr. Nwoye’s assertion, he had only helped to confirm what we know about the character of Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi. There is no denying the fact that, governor Ugwuanyi since his assumption of office has largely stabilized the turbulent political climate in Enugu State by initiating an all inclusive government where both the party in power and the opposition political parties have had a relatively smooth and significant run in the affairs of the state.
It must be recalled that the good people of Enugu East Senatorial District irrespective of political leanings gathered recently at Okpara Square with a clear mission in mind. It was to persuade the people’s governor to tow his predecessor’s path to anoint his successor come 2023 from the stock of the zone. It is again important to underscore the advantage gained from allowing the turn by turn rotational gubernatorial candidacy among the three major zones in the state. It is only those who desire to stand logic on it’s head or willing to exile the relative political harmony enjoyed since the turn of the present democractic experiences would attempt to disrupt what is clearly a panacea for even political involvement and engagement. I am quite certain that this request though an attempt at political maneuvers is not lost on Gov. Ugwuanyi who not only attended the rally as invited but sat calmly as it is his usual style to take in as much as he could regarding the unending debacle about gubernatorial rotation. One must be wondering the many issues going on in the mind of a people’s governor presently. Ugwuanyi may not be worried that his second and final tenure is gradually and steadily drawing to it’s climax, he may be worried about the many projects which he initiated and in a work mode to complete and therefore desires absolute concentration and less distraction. Gburu-Gburu may be worried that in spite of his seeming aloofness to be distracted by such mundane issues of annointment of a successor from a political zone, he may no longer have to remain so any longer if political realignment and synergy must suffuse the political climate of Enugu State moving forward. Another of his many worries at the moment despite his desire to continue on his developmental trajectories is the determination of an able and trust worthy successor who would carry on with his vision and mission for Ndi Enugu and possibly surpass his accomplishments in eight years as a leader of a glamorous city famous for Eastern Nigeria Renaissance.
In reaction to the campaign lobbying, Gov. Ugwuanyi did much to hood these worries and more, but characteristically admitted to have listened to all the speeches made by the political leaders across the divide from the zone and commended their uncommon political literacy and consciousness. He again struck the cord of fame being accorded Enugu state who cherish peace and unity irrespective of their respective religious bent or party affiliations, while admonishing all concerned to stay the course of peace and remain united. The political actors from Enugu East Senatorial zone must equally be commended for taking this political tactics to engender peace and for roundly confirming that peace has the singular potentiality of advancing the cause of order and even development. Governor Ugwuanyi must therefore not wait too long to respond to this request by anointing the awaited successor who would not only be acceptable to Ndi Enugu but one who is prepared to ascend more rungs in the words of the Governor on the development ladder. APC has since zoned it’s gubernatorial candidacy to Enugu East. All eyes and hopes are now on Ugwuanyi and his ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
May God continue to take control, because the state has been handed over to Him and Him alone.
