In Enugu state, zoning principle started immediately democracy returned in 1999 which was introduced by PDP as it was in the federal level. The power arrangement was shared between the three senatorial zones in the state which are Enugu East; Enugu West and Enugu North respectively. The rotational power arrangement in the state brought an unprecedented peace and harmony in Enugu state and cure the state from power domination and marginalization which characterize our political landscape in Nigeria today. Power rotates among the three senatorial zones in a TRIANGULAR EQUILIBRIUM for fairness and equity. The three senatorial zones have had turns in this power distribution with Enugu North taking their last slot in the political arrangement.
However, the issue of who to take the mantle of leadership now arose with various political assumptions and argument now in display from various quarters especially from the Greater Awgu section who argued that they are being marginalized in the scheme of power distribution in the state; forgetting that they are part of Enugu West political zone. Even though the agreement is not written down but it was meticulously followed, observed and respected despite the failed attempt to alter it in the past by other parties and some members of PDP. But at the end, the zoning principle takes supreme position in the power tussle which annihilate those who attempted to disrupt it. The principle accommodated all interests and created room for healthy political competition in the state. In practice, all zones have taken slots in the first phase of the rotation which will come to an end in 2023 and the second phase will start. The argument being whose zone to start the second phase. Some proponent of alteration argued that each zone should try their luck in the contest and anyone who wins, the arrangement will begin in that zone. This group who believed in this assumption is not happy with the kind of political peace we are experiencing in Enugu state brought by Gov Ugwuanyi administration through his political dialogue approach and are bend to disrupt it and return tigbuo; zogbuo politics back in the State which will not work. The argument postulated by greater Awgu has no political and moral bases but born out of shear emotions and sentiments to support their kinsman in the contest regardless of the political culture of peace zoning deepens in the state.
The power rotation should return to Enugu East who modeled and incubated the zoning principle in the state which benefited every zone in the state while the greater Awgu should wait until it is rotated back to Enugu West before laying claim to the position.
